I'm kind of with you, but conversations with my nephew when his dad puts him on the phone are hysterical
Nephew: "Hi Uncle Coke!"
Me: "Hi nephew. What have you been doing today?"
Nephew: "we went to the park and we played and daddy bought me an icecream!"
Me: "Wow! Thats sounds ama..."
Nephew: "BYE!" *drops phone handset on floor*

He is very young though (Not quite two) so when I ring him up to say good night to him I get some one word answers.
Hey little man, were you good for your mommy today?
Bear!
What?
Big House
Ohhh, you are watching bear in the big blue house?
Bye! * Phone drops *

Mine always yelled "bye" as an afterthought.....about the same time the next person had picked up the phone from the floor.
I think when a kid actually says "bye" first, it is a sign that they *really* like you.
